TRENTON, N.J. (WPVI) -- A man who fled from police on Thursday in Trenton, prompting a manhunt in the city, is now in custody.
Julius A. Troupe, 24, surrendered Thursday night at Trenton police headquarters.
Police say Troupe fled from officers around 6 a.m. in the area of Camden and Hanover streets.
Around 7 a.m., the Trenton Public School District said police had requested that all staff and students at Monument Intermediate School avoid the area for the time being.
"We didn't even know. We just came out here to take the kids in school, but there were a lot of police. We didn't even know what was happening," said Rubi Guevara. "It was kind of scary."
Staffers were told to temporarily report to Gregory School, Cadwalader School, or the Central Office, according to district officials.
"We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your cooperation. The safety of our students and staff remains our top priority," the district said.
Monument eventually opened to students around 9:30 a.m.
Sources tell Action News that Troupe was sentenced to five years in prison for aggravated assault and weapons charges in Trenton back in 2019.
He also has a previous burglary charge in Trenton and a weapons offense in East Windsor from 2024.
