PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Philadelphia police are searching for several suspects in connection with a shooting outside an elementary school that left an 18-year-old man dead and a teenager hospitalized.

The shots rang out just after 6 p.m. on Thursday on the 1700 block of Lindley Avenue.

Police say both victims were in a play area outside the James Logan School when about 38 gunshots were fired.

The 18-year-old victim was found in a courtyard area of the elementary school. He was unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds to his chest and torso, police said.

He was rushed to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The second victim, identified as a 17-year-old, was taken to Einstein Hospital in serious but stable condition.

"No members of the James Logan School community were involved. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who were impacted," said the School District of Philadelphia in a statement.

On Friday night, police released a picture of one of the suspects wanted in connection with the shooting.

The male suspect is reported to be in his late 20s to early 30s. Police say he has dreadlocks and a beard. He was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with a gray design on the front, and a large chain with a medallion around his neck. He may go by the nickname "Feek."

The suspect was last seen fleeing westbound on Lindley Avenue from Broad Street toward Carlisle Street.

Chopper 6 was overhead as police cordoned off the scene.

"For someone to fire 38 shots on school property during the day, it's just a very, very heinous crime," said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small.

Officers were also seen investigating just off school grounds because they say surveillance video shows people running in that direction after the shooting.

On Thursday night outside the school, Kevin Lewis and other members of the Philadelphia Anti-Drug/Anti-Violence Network gathered to offer support to anyone in the neighborhood.

"We're going to try to unite the masses, unite the neighbors, speak to them, see if any of them need any trauma counseling or anything like that," said Lewis.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Philadelphia police at 215-686-TIPS.
