Driver fleeing car meetup hits, kills motorcyclist in Mantua: Police

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Philadelphia police say a driver is under arrest after a fatal crash early Saturday morning.

It happened just after 1 a.m. at Belmont and Westminster avenues in the city's Mantua section.

According to police, the driver of a white Camaro was reportedly fleeing a car meetup at the Lowe's parking lot in the 1500 block of N. 50th Street.

The Camaro driver passed a stopped SEPTA bus while on Belmont Avenue, drove into oncoming traffic, and then ran a red light at Westminster before hitting the motorcyclist.

The 47-year-old biker, who police say had the green light, was thrown about 40 feet. His motorcycle then struck another vehicle.

The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at 1:18 a.m.

The driver of the Camaro fled on foot, police say, but was arrested in the 800 block of N. 44th Street.

A passenger in the car was injured and was taken to the hospital. That person's condition is not yet known.

Police say charges against the Camaro driver are pending.

The names of those involved have not been released.
