PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Police are investigating a deadly hit-and-run in North Philadelphia.

It happened at 12:15 a.m. in the 2700 block of North Broad Street.

A man in his 60s was crossing Broad Street, against the red light, when he was hit. Officials are still waiting to identify the victim.

The victim was rushed to Temple Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Police said car parts and some personal items in bags the victim was holding were left behind at the scene.

Officers located the Chevy Equinox they believed to be involved on Monday afternoon at Cumberland and Beach streets Fishtown. The vehicle had heavy damage to the front passenger's side, including a smashed windshield.

Locals who frequent the intersection say it's not a surprise that a driver would hit someone and keep going.

David Murray of North Philadelphia said he was hit while driving his car at Broad and Erie not long ago. He said he sees crashes at Broad and Lehigh all the time.

Broad Street is now considered a deadlier corridor than the Roosevelt Boulevard. That isaccording to the Vision Zero2024 report, which stated that Broad Street experienced more than one traffic death per month in 2024.

The report was compiled by a task force in an effort by the Parker Administration to address city traffic fatalities.

Kevin Lance, who frequents the intersection, said safety measures can only do so much.

"In general, they're working around the whole city as far as making it safer, but that's not going to control a driver that's not going to obey the law."
