Upper Providence Township issues statement on death of officer

UPPER PROVIDENCE TWP., Pa. (WPVI) -- An Upper Providence Township police officer was pronounced dead after investigators say he took his own life in the parking lot of the township campus on Monday night.

Chopper 6 was overhead around 7:30 p.m. after reports of shots fired outside the police station on the 1200 block of Black Rock Road.

"There was no danger to the public at any time. Our thoughts and prayers are with the officer and his family," said a township official in a statement.

"We thank the public for their grace as we navigate this tragedy," the statement continued.

No further information was released on the incident.
